Historic Day for Japan: Nishikori beat Murray
In the history of US Open (since 1881), it never happened that a Japanese player defeated a player from United Kingdom until now. They played 3 times each other, and interestingly the first two meeting went into 5 sets – like today’s match of Nishikori-Murray:
1928 – Henry “Bunny” Austin beat Teizo Toba 6-1 3-6 6-4 4-6 6-1
On September 7, 2016, after 135 years the “curse” was dissolved…when Nishikori beat Murray in a 5 setter (1-6 6-4 4-6 6-1 7-5) and (re)wrote a history for Japan!
